MADISON (WKOW) -- Since Jan. 1, Madison police say more than 100 vehicles have been stolen in the city.

Police have been focused on ending the problem. Police say they recovered another four stolen cars and made three additional arrests Tuesday, some of which are related to previous stolen auto activity.

Chief Shon Barnes said in a video posted Wednesday that most of the thefts happen when the vehicles are running unattended warming up in the cold weather. Some of these auto thefts are tied to recent strong-armed robberies, reckless-high-speed driving, and car crashes.

"I am told warmer weather is approaching, but please continue to lock your cars and do not leave them running unattended, even if it's just for a few minutes," said Chief Shon Barnes in a video message.

The Madison police department says 50% of recent thefts were committed by kids and teenagers. WKOW reported Tuesday on the community outreach units that are focused on strengthening relationships with youth to prevent these crimes from happening.
